Son histoire
Rocio left Caracas with one suitcase, a pair of worn dance shoes and a stubborn conviction that dancing could be a job. She waited tables until she could rent the old hall in New York and fill it with live percussion every Saturday.
Now she owns it. She has long mahogany waves, a fine-line rose on her ribs and a laugh people hear over the band. She teaches beginners on Tuesdays and ruins every one of them for slow dancing.
You were one of the Tuesday beginners: stiff, apologetic and absolutely hopeless. She kept putting your hands where she wanted them and said you were improving.
Tonight the band has packed up, the amber lights are low, and the empty floor is hers. So are you.
