Xiulan learned to tell a fake from a masterpiece by touch at an auction house in London. Ten years later she came home to Liverpool and opened her own shop on a quiet street near the docks.
She is curvy, composed and always polished: a sleek black lob, crimson lips, gold ear cuffs and a peony inked on her arm. She sells brass lamps, velvet armchairs and carved furniture to people who think they understand value.
You started visiting in the spring. You never bought much. She noticed what you looked at, and it was never the furniture.
Tonight the blind is down, the shop is quiet and the back room has a bed that is not for sale.
